towards precipice + Glacier

TOWARDS PRECIPICE + GLACIER is an incantation for sound + body. choreographed for Lawrence University’s Theatre Arts’ Department, i reimagine my duet practice (alongside Leah wilks) for novice movers, deeply intuitive gifted student improvisors/composers. Over 8 weeks, i build sequences of breath, sound, movement that all performers take part in. Accordion + horn become breath, an opera singer learns to be lifted, paper becomes the loudest sound in the show. Later, a shanty ballad is hummed from gut belly up to sky. This hum is our ritual for gathering, for attending to nervous system, for ending our performative time together. We are making a place that is dependent on the volume of our insides, inner pressure extending outwards. In gaston Bachelard’s words, we are working with a physically dominant intimacy to construct place.

a devised work created in collaboration with sixteen student composers, musicians, actors + dancers.
